Color in miniature dachshunds is one of those parts of the breed that looks simple from a distance (red, cream, dapple) and gets satisfyingly complicated the moment you look closer. What follows is how we think about color when we're planning a pairing, and what each of the coat patterns you'll see across our program actually is at a genetic level. None of this changes how we choose dogs to breed; health, temperament, and conformation come first. But for families who want to understand what they're looking at, here's the picture.
Shaded red
A shaded red is a red dachshund whose individual hairs darken toward the tips, especially along the back, ears, and tail, leaving the dog visibly two-toned in good light. The base color is set at the A locus by the ay allele (sable), the same allele behind the banded, black-tipped coat of a sable German Shepherd. (Those two are worth separating, since they get mixed up: the familiar black-saddle German Shepherd is a different pattern entirely, built on tan points plus a separate saddle modifier, not on ay.) On top of ay, several modifier genes control how much shading actually expresses, which is why some shaded reds are dramatically black-tipped and others are barely darker than a clear red.
A puppy born red will sometimes show heavy black guard hairs on the ears and tail at six weeks, lighten dramatically through the "uglies" stage around four months, and then settle back into a deeper, richer shaded red as an adult. We almost never call shading final until a dog is a year old. In the show ring, shaded reds are prized for the depth and dimension shading adds to the coat. A flat red dog reads as one color in motion; a shaded red catches the eye.
Cream: two different routes to the same word
This is the part of dachshund color that causes the most confusion, including among people selling puppies. "Cream" is one word covering two genetically distinct dogs.
The clear cream, or ee cream. The recessive e/e genotype at the E locus (MC1R) switches off eumelanin, the black and brown pigment, across the entire coat. The dog physically cannot produce a dark hair anywhere, so it is born pale and stays pale: even, uniform, no shading, no smoke on the ears. This is what most people picture when they hear the word cream. Some clear creams are a milky vanilla; others carry intensifier genes and read closer to a pale honey. There is a long-running debate in the dachshund community about whether the deepest of those should still be called cream or recategorized as red. For what it's worth, our position is that genetics decide, not the eye. ee makes a cream, regardless of how warm the tone reads.
The shaded cream, often called the English cream. This dog gets to cream by a completely different road. It is not e/e. It carries at least one working E allele, so it can still make dark pigment, and it reads cream because of intensity dilution at the I locus (MFSD12 and several partners), which strips the red pigment down toward pale cream while leaving eumelanin untouched. Put that on a sable base and you get the classic look: a soft champagne body with smoke-colored ears, tipping along the topcoat, and often a darker tail. Breeders write this genotype as "EE cream," meaning cream despite having a functional E, in contrast to the ee clear cream.
The practical difference families notice is what the puppy looks like at birth. A shaded cream is usually born surprisingly dark, sometimes nearly charcoal across the back and ears, and lightens over the first several months. A clear cream is born pale and never has anything to lose. That is a useful rule of thumb rather than a test, and we would rather confirm with a panel than with our eyes. We test for both routes with Embark before any cream-on-cream or cream-on-red breeding.
Dapple: the M locus
Dapple is the dachshund word for what most other breeds call merle. The M locus (PMEL) produces the characteristic mottled, lightened patches over an otherwise normal coat: a red dapple is a red dog with cream-and-rust patches; a chocolate dapple is a chocolate dog with tan-and-gold patches; a cream dapple is the rarest, where the dapple pattern shows as near-white patches on a pale base.
Dapple is not a simple on-or-off gene. It is caused by an insertion whose length determines how strongly it expresses, which gives a whole series of alleles rather than two: non-dapple, cryptic, atypical, classic, and harlequin. Cryptic and atypical alleles can leave a dog looking like a solid, or nearly so, while still being passed to puppies at full strength. A 2021 study looking specifically at dachshunds found cryptic and hidden dapple variants common enough to conclude that testing before breeding is the only reliable approach.
The most important rule in dapple breeding is that two dapples are never paired together. It's the one absolute on our program. A quarter of the puppies from such a pairing are expected to inherit two copies, and those double-dapple dogs carry serious, well-documented risk: eye malformations including microphthalmia and colobomas, and congenital deafness at rates far above the rest of the breed. Every responsible dachshund program tests for the dapple gene before any breeding involving a dappled dog, and pairs only with a non-dapple partner.
Common misconceptions
Most of what follows we have been asked directly, usually by families who read something confident on a sales page.
"English cream is a color."
It is a lineage and marketing label, not a registry color. The AKC standard lists cream, with or without shading. There is no separate "English cream" entry, and no paperwork anywhere will say it. Two dogs can both be registered cream and have arrived there by the two completely different genetic routes described above. The name travels with a price premium often enough that it is worth knowing it describes where a dog's ancestors were bred, not a distinct variety.
The claim you will also see, that English cream in dachshunds is the same allele as English cream in cocker spaniels, does not hold up. Cream in cockers is generally the ee recessive route, which is the other kind of dachshund cream.
"My cream puppy came out dark, so it isn't really cream."
If it is a shaded cream, dark is exactly what you should expect. Those puppies carry working eumelanin genes and are frequently born with a charcoal cast over the back, ears, and tail that clears over the first several months. It is the most common question about color we get from new families, and it usually resolves itself by four or five months. A clear cream, by contrast, is pale from day one.
"Rare colors are better."
Rarity is scarcity, not quality. It is worth sitting with the reason a given color is rare, because for several of them the answer is that careful programs decline to produce them. Double dapple is rare because it should never be made deliberately. Blue and isabella are rare partly because of the coat problems below. What a puppy costs should track the health testing, the veterinary care, and the raising behind it, not the coat, and we would say the same about a color we happened to have.
"You can tell whether a dog is a dapple by looking at it."
You cannot, reliably. Cryptic and atypical dapples can look like clear coats and still pass a fully expressing allele to their puppies. Dogs have even been documented as mosaic, carrying the variant in some cells and not others. This is the specific reason we panel every dog rather than judging by appearance, and it is why a pairing that looks safe in photographs is not the same as a pairing that is safe on paper.
"Dapple to dapple is fine as long as one of them is lightly marked."
This is the belief that produces accidental double dapples, and it deserves its own warning rather than a footnote. How much dappling shows on a dog tells you nothing about what it passes on. A lightly marked, cryptic, or entirely solid-looking dapple contributes the same allele as a heavily marked one. The rule is not "avoid pairing two obvious dapples." It is that any dog testing positive for a dapple allele is bred only to a dog testing negative.
"Blue and isabella are just pretty dilutes."
Both come from d/d at the D locus (MLPH), and that dilution carries a well-documented risk of Color Dilution Alopecia: thinning and breaking coat, follicular problems, and recurrent skin infections, typically appearing somewhere between four months and three years. Puppies look normal at birth, which is part of why the problem gets passed along. Dachshunds sit on the standard list of affected breeds alongside Dobermans and miniature pinschers. Not every dilute dog develops it, but it is a real welfare reason a program may decline to produce the color, and ours does.
"Piebald is a kind of dapple."
Different gene, different mechanism. Piebald sits at the S locus (MITF) and produces clean white patches with sharp edges, usually on the chest, feet, and tail tip. It does not carry the eye malformations associated with double dapple. The nuance worth holding on to is that in both patterns, hearing risk tracks how much white a dog ends up with, especially across the head, rather than the allele itself. That is also why pairing a dapple with a piebald is approached carefully: the two patterns stack white.
"Dapple itself is unhealthy."
A single copy of dapple, from a tested pairing with a non-dapple partner, is not a health problem. The risk lives almost entirely in the double-dapple combination. We say this because the warnings above are easy to overcorrect on, and a dapple puppy from a properly tested pairing is simply a dachshund with a beautiful coat.
"The color at eight weeks is the color we're getting."
Rarely. Shading deepens, creams clear, red puppies pass through a washed-out stage around four months, and dapple patches shift as the adult coat comes in. We try to describe where a puppy is likely to end up, but we do not treat shading as settled until a dog is about a year old.
"Creams are calmer than other colors."
There is no evidence for it. No coat color locus has been linked to temperament in dogs. Where people notice a real pattern, it more likely follows the particular lines those dogs come from than anything about pigment. Temperament comes from the parents, the socialization, and the weeks a puppy spends underfoot in a busy home.
"A color forecast tells you what the litter will be."
It gives probabilities, not a guarantee. The loci themselves are predictable, but the modifier genes controlling how strongly shading expresses are not fully mapped, so we can tell you a litter will be shaded without being able to tell you how much. The one thing a forecast does settle absolutely is that we will not produce a double dapple, because that depends only on the parents and not on chance.
How we use this

Before a pairing goes on the calendar, we run a color forecast against both parents' genotypes, not because color is ever the deciding factor, but because we'd like to be able to tell families honestly what range of coats a litter is likely to produce, and to make absolutely sure we never produce a double-dapple by accident.
